Name: Josie Whitehead

I've been a member of Skype an Author for some years now. I am a children's poet who writes for every age group (including adults) but especially for children. My main mission is to delight children with my poems and also to provide poetry which will of of great value to teachers in their classrooms. I write most of my poems with rhyme and with metre/rhythm and lots of stories. I am fully aware that rhyming and rhythmic poetry is so important to younger children because it helps them to develop phonological awareness, a key literacy tool. It is also lends itself beautifully as performance poetry.
I started writing only five years ago, greatly encouraged by children in my local primary school whom I visited weekly. I used to write a poem for them for three weeks and did this over four years. The children, in my second year, asked me to make an internet website and put my poems onto it so that they could read them at home after school. I was unknown to the world outside of this classroom as a poet at this time and today (three and a half years later), more than 560,000 visitors have been to my website and the poems went into 188 countries of the world last year. 602,000 pages were visited.
I have now written 900 new poems and have five websites. The main one you can visit on the above link, or by just Googling JOSIE'S POEMS. Many of my poems have been chosen by teachers all across the county of West Yorkshire, where I live (in the north of England), for publication. I have, to date, 13 books of my own poems which have the trademark JOSIE'S POEMS on each book. You can also visit my Facebook Page (JOSIE'S POEMS), and I'd be so glad to meet you there.
I often do skype visits to classrooms and it is great to meet children who have been enjoying my poems. I have been a teacher all my working life and I much prefer skype visits to classrooms, for a short half-hour visit, than having to travel in person to classrooms by car. My visits are not expensive (£40 including a ten minute test-run and briefing with the teacher before the visit) and at this low cost, it means that teachers often ask me to do a series of visits to their classroom each term.
If you go to my website, to the Web Index, rather than the Poetry Index, you will see a series of articles to help teachers to understand how rhythm is made, because I always feel rather sad that teachers are only teaching their children to write prose split into small lines, rather than encouraging them to write with rhythm in their writing. It isn't difficult. I would be glad to come to your classrooms and help with this. Children find it so much fun.
I hope that some of you may invite me to your classrooms. If you go to my website you can easily see how to book a visit with payment via paypal and then a date arranged. I look forward to meeting you all. Josie

If you Google JOSIE'S POEMS you will see thirteen new books containing my poems which you might like for your classrooms. Each of these books is linked to a website where you can find the poems with lovely illustrations and with voice recordings etc etc Each week, if you go to my Poetry Corner, of the website, you will find me talking about one of my poems with stories surrounding it, and I read the poem for your children to enjoy. There is also a Web Index on the website where you can get lots of help with teaching your children how to write good poetry. Do come to the website but above all, come and say hello in my guestbook. I love to meet my visitors. Last year the poems went into 188 countries of the world - I hope yours was one of these. Josie

My name is Josie Whitehead and I am a poet who writes for every age group, from preschool children to retired people.

Although I am a poet now, I have only been so in very recent years, and was encouraged to write by children in my local school. They wanted poetry, so they told me, that was written with a rhythm/metre and they liked rhyming poetry and especially poems which told stories or were funny. So I would write a poem a week and often given the subject by them. They loved what I did for them.

The following year's children asked me to put my poems on a website for them, which I did. The following year I went into a preparatory school near my home especially to take the headmaster's class for poetry each month and I tried my new poems out on them.

Last September I made a new website, and if you Google JOSIE'S POEMS you will find it. A year on and I will have five books of poetry, all of my own work, in schools, shops, libraries etc, and also a small animated film of a legend which I have made into rhyming verse and called "The Wizard of Alderley Edge." The poems are in the hands of a local educational publisher, and a very good man too, and they have been tried out by teachers in many classes.

I have now written over 600 poems, and over 300 of them will be in these first five books.

I am very happy to make Skype visits to classrooms as I find Skype works well. I have taught myself italian and for one whole year I have practised one to one via Skype with a teacher from Italy who wanted also to practise his English. There were no problems at all and it was a big success and the best way to improve a language.

I would welcome any advice from anyone who has done Authors in Schools Visits, and would like to hear from teachers also who might like me to visit their classrooms.
