Hi,
I'm guessing that a number of authors here will be at the upcoming ALA convention in Washington, DC--it will be a great place to meet a few of us in person and decide on a Skype visit that's right for your group. Maybe authors who will be there can post to this thread the information about when/where they'll be signing? I'll get the ball started: I'll be signing Tillmon County Fire at the Eerdmans booth (booth 2612 on the Exhibits Floor) on Monday, 6/28, from 2-3 p.m.--then that same afternoon I'll be moderating a panel sponsored by ALA's Rainbow Project, from 4-5:30 p.m. in room 152A of the Convention Center. Looking forward to meeting any number of librarians/school folks/authors/others connected with Skype an Author!

Yes, our panel (which includes Cynthea Liu, Lindsay Leavitt, and Olugbemisola Rhuday Perkovich) will include multiple ways for audiences to interact with writers virtually, including Skype! I believe Cynthea's portion covers Skype.

As a teacher that has never used Skype before, I was presently surprised with how easy it was to use. Working with Evelyn Coleman was a pleasure! She went above and beyond in helping me throughout the process. In meeting with my students, Evelyn gave them wonderful techniques to help them with their own writing. As a middle school teacher, teaching acceptance is one of the most difficult subjects to teach. Evelyn truly inspired my students to embrace cultural difference in a way that I could have never taught them on my own.

I think Skype is such an excellent tool! I've done about 12 Skype visits so far and each one has worked out so well-- lots of positive feedback. Teachers may be apprehensive at first, but when they experience it, they love it! Can't wait to do more!!

Our 5th grade students in an international school in Seoul, Korea, had a fantastic time skype-ing with Maribeth Boelts. We have read her book Those Shoes in our class. We are using her story as a mentor text for our literary essay unit. It was great to be able to talk to an actual author all the way from Korea. The students loved hearing about her life as a writer, her revision process and where she got her idea for Those Shoes. They were so excited to hear that she is coming out with a new book for 5th graders called The P.S. Brothers. We will definitely be purchasing a copy for our classroom library. Thank you for visiting our classroom! We hope to talk to you again soon.

I'm looking forward to see what this format can create. My novels are written for adults, with complex, if often comic, themes explored. Nevertheless, I think a class of seniors or AP students interested in literary fiction, philosophy, music, and/or politics, might easily grasp them. Discussions are always more interesting when groups have read all or relevant parts of the material, but I am happy to talk about writing in general, and its function in the modern world.
My published books and their themes are as follows. Two more should be appearning soon.

The Good Doctor Guillotin -- capital punishment, first use of the guillotine during the French Revolution
The Annotated Nose -- creating media myths; battling the "contemporary plague"
Skulk -- the fate of political activists in a world dead set against them

Golem Song -- the pathology of thinking one is chosen
The Education of Arnold Hitler -- racism; Vietnam war; performance art; neo-Nazism

Memoir:
Rehearsing With Gods: Photographs and Essays on the Bread & Puppet Theater (with Ron Simon, photographer)

Our Fifth Graders had a 10 minute skype session with Mike. He was wonderful, funny, and the kids were amazed at how quickly he taught them some drawing tricks. We now own several of his books. Thanks Mike Artell for sharing with Heritage Hall.

Hi,
I received this message from a school district and was wondering if anyone here (authors, schools, libraries) have experience with any of these other Skype-like technologies:
"Our Network folks do not like Skype because of the way the that system
is configured.
They suggest oovoo or aol video chat through iChat or something
called sightspeed (www.sightspeed.com)
See if any of those can work."

I am trying to expand my schools technology integration map and would love to find an interdisciplinary link with Language arts and social studies through a book/author skype visit. Anyone who can recommend one of the authors who might fit this category would save me so much time and effort.

I have written and illustrated the "Big Bill and Buddies, “series of children’s books. They deal directly with social issues, Bullying, diversity, acceptance and forgiveness. I have an interactive program for K-5. Some schools have used the for language arts as well. My Publisher is Pelican in Gretna LA. Thank you

Looks like a great concept. Do you think it would work with International Schools in China if we could find some respectable time? It would be a fantastic way for our students to interact with Authors they might not otherwise get a chance to "meet".

I'd love to participate as well! My newest young adult novel, Tillmon County Fire, features a character who was adopted from China as an infant--and, more broadly, I'd love to hear from students at an international school regarding the book's themes around identity and fitting in. I just did a "practice visit" (5 minutes) with a group of 15 librarians. I could hear the woman who was in charge just fine (she was right next to the monitor), but not the people in the audience. The audience said they couldn't hear me very well and I kept "fading in and out." They adjusted their speaker volume, but that didn't seem to help.
After doing some research, I discovered that I might want to change my Sound settings on Skype from "automatically adjust" to a manual setting at the medium to high range. Next time I have a chance, I will test this theory.
Apparently there was also a "delay" for them, so I was coming across like those reporters on TV when they seem to be taking "forever" to respond to a question.
I also need to remember to have a glass of water handy. My throat was dry, and I kept coughing when trying to talk.

Hello! Just wondering if anyone has any advice of a good way to market teachers/librarians to get word out about Skype presentations? And in a cost effective way? I'd certainly appreciate any feedback. I did send out an email and flyer to all my readers and did ask them to pass it on and gave them a free gift for doing so. As well, as I contacted teachers we have done presenations for locally and asked them to share our information, and gave them a free gift as well. Any other thoughts? Thanks so much!

On November 18th, 4th and 5th graders, skyped author Mary Amato. We just finished our book club discussion on Naked Mole-Rat Letters and ended the book club with a question/answer skype format. The kids loved seeing Mary and listening to her answers after they asked questions. This was a first time author skype for us and we loved it! The kids are ready to read more books by Mary and can't wait for her new novel to be on sale. Thanks for this great way to talk to authors!
