Her son David’s curiosity and imagination in particular sparked ideas in Lane that led to elaborate tales. Her husband also served as inspiration for Uncle Arnel and the Swamp Witch. Mrs. Lane loves to share her Cajun stories and creative process with children. Audiences: Best suited for grades K-5. Alison will present to small or large groups, though groups of one or two classes at a time allows for more individual attention and better Q&A time. Available Times: Her weekend shifts as a registered nurse leave her free during the week for school, library and summer camp visits. The author lives in New Orleans, LA. In-Depth Visit Length: 45-60 minutes Through a PowerPoint presentation, Alison will introduce students to the “swamp critters” featured in her book, including egrets, turtles, nutria, crawfish, raccoons, and alligators. Students will learn fun facts about these native species. A tooth and scale from an alligator, stuffed animals, and deer skin will be passed around so students can get an up-close look. Alison will play an interview with a swamp tour guide in Cypress Island Swamp about the Swamp Witch and what happened to Uncle Arnel, and she will discuss her inspiration for the story.
