HOW A PICTURE BOOK IS MADE
Curriculum for kindergarten through fourth grade
During this presentation Anna talks about the process of creating a children's book, in a way that children can easily understand and relate to. She shows projects she worked on as a child, and discusses how they turned into the books she makes now. Anna will talk about how she came to be a writer and artist, with a focus on how important it is to experiment and tell stories that you have a strong personal connection with.
Her presentation includes a start to finish explanation of how a book is made, beginning with the "brainstorming" process that happens as an idea develops, and the way a character comes to life visually.
Anna will then walk her audience step by step through the stages a book goes through after the idea for the story has taken shape. You will learn about how she makes a "rough copy" of her stories and gets advice from her editors, and then how she goes about making her paintings. Next she covers the steps her artwork goes through as it is transformed into a printed book!
The presentation will end with Anna doing a drawing demonstration.
Anna adapts her talk to the age of her audience. If multiple classes are grouped together for a presentation, it is suggested that they are close in age.

Prerequisites:
It is essential to a successful presentation that the students be familiarized with Anna’s books before the day of her visit. This allows her presentation to be more relevant to students, helps to build their excitement for her visit, and gives them some time to come up with questions they might like to ask. This can be done by simply reading her books in the classroom and having a basic discussion about what an author/illustrator does. Feel free to use her author bio to discuss with the students some of her personal background. It is also effective to work with students on a book making activity that helps introduce the concepts involved in creating a book.
After a date has been agreed upon for Anna to virtually visit your school, she will send you a packet of information to assist you in preparing your students.
