Author Address: Bergen County, New Jersey
Presentations: I give talks to children about the research behind Shlemiel Crooks and how I based the story on a 1918 Yiddish newspaper article. I encourage children to research their family history and to write short fiction based on their research. Like my Jewish Children's Book Author cohorts on the Skype an Author Network, I find that an informal "book club"-style chat with a small group of students works well over Skype.
Audiences: Shlemiel Crooks is for ages 9-12, but I also give presentations to older students on "How to Get Your Book Published." I describe my genealogy research that became the basis for Shlemiel Crooks and how I first self-published the story as a miniature book for collectors. I offer guidelines on writing fiction and submitting a book manuscript to publishing houses. For the presentation, I draw on my background and experience as a literary agent with Liza Dawson Associates in Manhattan. I also give talks to parents and teachers on "Helping Children Write Fiction from Family History." I explain how children can use their own genealogical research to write a short book or story.
