Presentations:"The Making of a Book... An Illustrator's Tale" - Based on the children's book, "Amoeba Hop" which Betsy illustrated and co-authored with singer/songwriter, Christine Lavin, this program explores the creation of a book from the illustrator's point of view. Betsy describes the many steps of book illustration from initial pencil sketch to final oil paintings. Thumbnail sketches, a book dummy and the use of a computer in the design of the pages are all part of the interesting procedure.
Depending on the grade level and the school's needs, Betsy can concentrate her presentation in the following areas:
- How an artist adds to the content of a book in different ways. Emotions can be visually shown without being spelled out. Also, a reader can be drawn into a book by the artist's skilled use of unusual "points of view"
- How a song can be used to make the learning of unfamiliar information easy and fun!
- The scientific aspects of "Amoeba Hop" - Teachers across the country have already found the wildly creative song and book very beneficial when introducing the unit on microscopic life forms (Amoeba and Paramecium, etc)."Amoeba Hop" was honored with a "Best Books Award" from the American Association for the advancement of Science
- Students find that there is more than one way to solve a problem or learn a lesson. "Amoeba Hop" combines music, art, writing and science to uniquely foster creative learning in the classroom!
