Presentations: Justice and fairness are the themes that resonate for me when I talk to students. I discuss my writing process, but more importantly I focus on what "writing" means to community. I want students to understand the connections between what we do as a society and what we write and say to one another and how that relates to building our world. I share with them my extensive research and revision process so they know that writing is revision. I do exercises with them and attempt to help them get in touch with the deeper layers of their own thoughts. I prefer discussing the teachers goals for their students prior to the session to get an idea of what the teacher believes to be most important for their students. I design my talks based on the students needs. I also do video-writing workshops, which involves pre-assignments for the students.

Audiences: My books range from 2nd grade to High School.

No Cost Meet the Author Visit: 10 to 15 minutes

In-Depth Visit Cost: 30 minunte session - $200 1-hour session $300

Prerequisites: It helps if children are familiar with my work. If reading longer books like Freedom Train is a problem, then I normally read White Socks Only and begin a discussion about writing in general from this book.

Evelyn Coleman is an extremely gracious lady and connects so easily with the students. My book club of 7th and 8th grade students LOVED the experience of talking with Mrs. Coleman. They were impressed and inspired by her dedication to creating realistic characters in a place and time period that required a great deal of research and interviews of people that were a part of the real life happenings depicted in her book Freedom Train. I highly recommend Mrs. Coleman as an author that writes stories that need to be read and that will provide an enriching experience for your students when you Skype with her.

As a teacher that has never used Skype before, I was presently surprised with how easy it was to use. Working with Evelyn Coleman was a pleasure! She went above and beyond in helping me throughout the process. In meeting with my students, Evelyn gave them wonderful techniques to help them with their own writing. As a middle school teacher, teaching acceptance is one of the most difficult subjects to teach. Evelyn truly inspired my students to embrace cultural difference in a way that I could have never taught them on my own.
