Presentations: "The Ooze and Ahs! of Writing and Science!": During hundreds of school visits over the past 10 years, I've found the most common question is: "Where do you get your ideas?" Writers, including myself, often work with topics that engaged them since they were very young. I describe how my childhood fascinations led to my work as a science textbook editor and then to my humorous science-adventure series, "Andrew Lost." I show children how to use their own interests, questions – even their fears – in their writing. Children are enthralled by images of the bizarre creatures – dinosaurs, insects, eyelash mites, giant squids, blue whales – that captured my attention since I was 6 years old and that inspire my writing today. Kids are amazed to learn about sea slugs that live in the deepest ocean and distract predators by tossing their lungs and guts at them. Older children (grades 2 and up) are deliciously grossed out by "The Zoo on You" - microscopic creatures like dust mites that eat your skin flakes, and eyelash mites that raise their tiny families in your eyelash follicles. Eeeeeuw! I empower children by telling them about kids – as young as 3! – who have made important scientific discoveries. I encourage children to take their own interests, enthusiasms, and especially their questions, seriously. These may fuel their writing, their work, and their fun throughout their lives. I offer writing and research tips that everyone can use. Presentations conclude with Q&A. The only problem I've encountered is that children have so many questions, they don’t want to return to their classrooms!

My husband Dan Greenburg (author of four series of children's books, also listed on this site) and I have used Skype to present writing workshops, too. We are pleased to customize our presentations to the needs of librarians and teachers.

Audiences: pre-K through adults (parents, teachers' and librarians' groups). The "Andrew Lost" series and presentation is especially popular with the K-3 crowd.

Available Times: Please contact me to arrange a mutually convenient time.

No recording of Skype Sessions without permission from the author.

No Cost Meet the Author Visit: 10-15 minutes (would always precede an in-depth visit to assure that the Skype connection is working properly)
In-Depth Visit Length:
50 - 60 minutes (customized to suit your needs)

In-Depth Visit Cost: Varies depending on desired length of visit, number of visits required, and whether you would like to include Dan. Please contact me to discuss.

Prerequisites: By the time of the visit, children should be familiar with one of more of the "Andrew Lost" books. You can view titles at my website: www.jcgreenburg.net. To get the most out of the visit, younger children (pre-K - 1) should be given some instruction in what a question is and how to ask one.
