Presentations: I have been doing author visits to schools since 2004 when my first book, Voices in St. Augustine, was published. As a lover of history, I weave history into my story lines by selecting settings like St. Augustine, Florida; Amelia Island, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; and Charleston, South Carolina. During my presentation I like to share unique and sometimes surprising details about some of the historical places and events mentioned in my books.
Each book also has a hook to get kids to read it. Voices in St. Augustine is a mystery. Adventures on Amelia Island: A Pirate, A Princess and Buried Treasure, has both pirates and buried treasure in the story - both of which are historically accurate for that area. And Ghosts on the Coast: A Visit to Savannah and the Low Country includes a few ghost stories.
My third book, Trouble on the St. Johns River, has an environmental theme with a universal message about the importance of clean water. During my presentation I share stories with students about friendly manatees and injured loggerhead sea turtles. I also talk about ways that kids can make a difference in protecting our ecosystems.
As a former English teacher, I also like to talk about the writing process with special emphasis on revising and rewriting, as I know students don't like to do that. It's important that they know how significant editing is in producing a written document.
I will be glad to customize my presentation for any class, based on suggestions given by the teacher. And of course, I will answer any questions the students have prepared. The Q&A is my favorite part of any presentation, as that's when the students get to know me as a real person.
