Author Website: www.kristyncrow.comPresentations: Kristyn Crow is the author of COOL DADDY RAT, illustrated by Mike Lester, which was recognized as a "Best Book of 2008" by the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books. She also wrote BEDTIME AT THE SWAMP, illustrated by Macky Pamintuan, a 2009 Ladybug Nominee. Her third book, THE MIDDLE CHILD BLUES, illustrated by David Catrow, will be released in October of 2009, followed by her fourth book, SKELETON CAT, which comes from Scholastic in 2010.
In her "Meet the Author" presentations, Kristyn will introduce herself to the students, read from one or two of her books, and answer questions.
In her in-depth visits, Kristyn can talk more about her books, and could guide your students in several rhythm activities to strengthen reading skills. She may even conduct a "Swamp Rhythm Symphony" to her book, BEDTIME AT THE SWAMP. Your students could be the performers! Let the clappin', snappin', and stompin' begin! Or, brainstorm a picture book story with Kristyn guiding the class.
Audiences: Kristyn has spoken to parents, teachers, librarians, and to children ranging from grades K - 12. To the older students, she'll discuss writing as a career and give picture book manuscript tips. To younger students, she'll talk about being an author, how picture books are made, and how, using rhythm, children can become interactive participants in a story.
Available Times: Generally most weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, and other times with advance notice.
No recording of Skype Sessions without permission from the author. No Cost Meet the Author Visit: 10 - 15 minutes.
In-Depth Visit Length: 45 minutes to 1 hour.
In-Depth Visit Cost: $150.00
Prerequisites: An author presentation is
much more exciting for students when they are familiar with the books
beforehand. If teachers and staff demonstrate enthusiasm for the event (and for reading and writing in general), the children will follow that lead.
NOTE: If your elementary school has access to rhythm sticks or instruments such as tambourines, shakers, and drums, these would greatly enhance the visit and Kristyn's discussions about rhythm in verse. However, they are optional.
It can be an added delight for the students to have the opportunity to purchase a book written by the author to take home. Not only is it a fun souvenir of the occasion, but a great reading incentive! A bookstore close to your school or organization can help with advance orders. Kristyn can sign and mail stickers that students can put inside their books.
