Hi! Welcome to my page on Skype An Author. What a great idea, don't you think? I've included details about my presentations below but feel free to contact me about adapting them for your group.
Susan
Author Website: www.susancaseybooks.com
Author Address: Los Angeles, CA
Presentations: Susan travels nationally as a speaker for schools, conferences and young author festivals. She illustrates the fun and fascination of non-fiction writing as she presents information about her books on invention. Her presentations can be a combination of or exclusively focus on:
- Kids Inventing!
In talking about Kids Inventing! I demonstrate the inventions created by kid inventors-- basketballs, crayon holders, no-spill bowls and walkie-talkies. Students seem to realize that non-fiction writers learn and write about real people and that inventing can be fun and within their reach. In demonstrating the actual inventions--some of which have been made into products sold nationwide-- I make the point that inventing calls not only for creative thinking, but also for application of math and science, art and communication skills. - America's Women Inventors!
When I’ve presented at schools, students are often surprised to discover how interested they are in finding out about America’s women inventors including Bette Graham, creator of Liquid Paper, Maria Telkes, inventor of the Solar heated house, Madam Walker, creator of hair care products and the first African-American female millionaire, Stephanie Kwolek, inventor of Kevlar, the material used to make bullet-proof vests and others. I tell stories about the inventors while showing images of them, their inventions and patents or trademarks. - Non-fiction Writing is a Blast!
Before becoming an author, I was a photojournalist and I still write articles with photos for magazines. I’ve reported on topics from foreign travel and adventure sports to the construction industry. In my presentations, I talk about how I do my research and write non-fiction.
Audiences: Susan tailors her presentations to her audiences.
- I've presented to audiences ranging from six-year-old first graders to family groups to adults. With the youngest groups I show them inventions created by kids or women along with some pictures of inventors then prompt them to try to think of ideas for improvements for household items. I also write a story with them based on an interview with someone in the audience. With the older students and adult groups, I use the same format but show many more images, tell lots more stories about inventors, and involve them in more sophisticated interactive activities, basically changing the presentation depending on the age and interests of the group.
