Big thank you to the author Natasha Wing who Skyped with our younger students during our Bookfest week at the end of April 2012 at Shigawake-Port Daniel School in eastern Quebec, CA! Our students and teachers really appreciated her respect of the Quebec culture. Our younger students always enjoy her holiday books. And our students’ favorite book is “How to raise a dinosaur”, a cute fun book. After her presentation, many younger students asked for “How to raise a dinosaur” in the library. Thank you again Natasha and have a nice summer!

Big thank you to the author Marsha Diane Arnold who Skyped with our students during our Bookfest week at the end of April 2012 at Shigawake-Port Daniel School in eastern Quebec, CA! Our students and teachers really appreciated that Marsha spent her valuable time with us. Our students and teachers like her multicultural books very much especially “Heart of a tiger” which is a great book and we have learned a lot from it. The activity and discussion generated after we read the book also helped our grade 6 students prepare their provincial exam. Thanks again Marsha and have a nice summer!

How can I tell if authors are available for Skype calls during the summer. I am keeping the school library open for another month. Who is abvailable to speak with the kids? How can I find out without contacting each individual?

Hello. I would assume that the authors are available in the summer unless their profile indicates otherwise. I am certainly available.

As folks who are presumably close to the education process, I'm curious as to your take on the future of books. In my recent dealings with a class of ~100 honors high school English students, all of whom read my novel as part of the curriculum, I was a bit shocked to hear that more than 95% of them preferred reading the genuine book to the electronic article. Guess there's hope for paper after all...

I can perhaps understand how reading a novel from a printed book would be preferable to reading from an Ebook reader. I am a children's poet and teachers like to have my writing either in Ebooks or preferably from my internet website up on their visual display units so that every person in the classroom is reading from the same place at the same time. Reading from the website on a VDU is rather like having my poems displayed on a blackboard - in the "olden days". So I am now concentrating on getting my work prepared for website reading rather than from a book and adding voice recordings, beautiful illustrations etc.

I just had my first, 15 minute introductory skype visit with a pre-school class on Long Island. I think they were surprised to see me in sunny California. I loved having a chance to visit, without flying! The only thing that was a little different, besides not being there in person was, their monitor where they could see me was not in the same place as their camera so I saw their profiles. Something to think about for the next visit. I think Diane Arnold's idea of a youtube infomercial for her skype visits is brillant!

My picture book has just been released by Lee and Low Publishers and is also available on Amazon. The book has garnered two strong reviews by Childrens Library Journal and Kirkus. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150156234096719 http://www.leeandlow.com/ http://blog.schoollibraryjournal.com/afuse8production/2011/02/09/review-of-the-day-hot-hot-roti-for-dada-ji-by-f-zia/

How I won The Literary Lottery

I became a published author thanks to the power of book clubs and independent booksellers. After 5 years of rejection, I self-published my first novel, THE RICHEST SEASON, and it did so well, it was sold at auction to Hyperion (Disney), then at auction to Random House in Germany, and now several other countries. I'm now starting my 4th novel, and I love speaking about my unusual publishing journey, and my ultimate success, what some writer's blogs called "Winning The Literary Lottery."
