The Intruders
What does a black, a Chinese, an Italian and a Puerto Rican Bronx teen have in common?—A thirst for excitement! They get their adventure and more when they set out to explore a cave in their neighborhood.
After falling down a ledge, the teens find that they have time-travelled three centuries into the future–in the middle of a war between tribes. Fortunately, one tribe accepts them.
The teenagers soon find that they have a unique and thrilling advantage in the conflict. They know the land, and the tribes, who had lost most modern technology, do not. Unfortunately, within weeks, their adventure became too real as both friends and enemies are getting killed! This is no longer fun. This is war!

Throwing children of different races together will not automatically foster friendships and deep connections. It takes effort to create a multiculturalism awareness. This teen novel helps to initiate discussions on diversity, stereotyping and privilege. Same age, same height, same grade—they could have been identical twins, but they were not. Yet they lived in the same imperfect world with overwhelming family problems. Greg’s father had walked out after striking his mother. Steve’s father refused to leave after repeatedly abusing his mother. Each boy, in his own way, was begging for help. They lived in different homes. They had different personalities. One was black and the other was white and they had switched!

Have You Always Wanted to Find a Secret Room?
I still knock on the walls in old places, hoping to find one! Shawna and Thea figured out where it was, in Thea's house. But that was just the start of what had to get figured, solved, worked out ... who knew life in a Vermont village could get so complicated? And have such mysteries in it?
The book officially releases on 9-10-11, when you can get it at your local independent bookstore or order it online. But I have some advance copies (both e-versions and in print) of THE SECRET ROOM for readers who like to review books and have a place that will publish their reviews. Let me know if you're interested!

Self-esteem and resiliency in our kids-I get to these issues via
My goal as a positive psychologist and an author of books for girls, tweens and teens is to reinforce that we all have talents, strengths and potential. We are all special and unique. I have done this through creating a character, a girl, who speaks to all of us, for all of us and is in many ways all of us. We follow her growing up issues and see her conquer lots of difficult situations like a first crush, moving, a new baby, a death in the family, being teased, not being understood by parents, moods, etc.
I'd love to know what you think about the issues of self-esteem in kids and also the topics that are most crtical to them as they move from late childhood to early teens.
